Assistant Catering Manager

This is an exciting opportunity to join our wonderful team to serve freshly cooked school meals onsite for our children here at Mersea Island School. The new Assistant Catering Manager will be experienced at working within a school kitchen, understanding the importance of healthy eating whilst acknowledging that food should be appealing for all children who have a range of dietary needs.

The successful candidate will be working alongside the Catering Manager and a small team of Catering Assistants. You must be friendly and approachable. The school meals provided should be delivered to the highest standards, ensuring excellence as the school believes the eating experience is part of our whole school experience.

A full Job Description and Person Specification are attached, but please find a brief summary of duties below:

· Provide assistance with preparing and presenting all food in line with Statutory Regulations and School Food Standards;
· Ensuring that methods of preparation and presentation comply with currently recognised catering standards and food safety legislation;
. Deputise for the Catering Manager as required
· Follow the menu and recipes agreed;
· Ensuring prompt service of all meals;
· Ensuring the school kitchen is well maintained and cleaned thoroughly.

Candidates will have an awareness of and experience dealing with:
· Completing monitoring and food temperature records;
· Managing a daily cleaning checklist;
· Cross contamination and allergen management;
· Menu planning and compliance;
· Health and safety in food hygiene.

Hours of work: 9am to 2pm Monday to Wednesday (term time only) and 9.30am to 2pm Thursday & Friday - 24 hours per week

Scale 2 / 3 depending on experience

Information about the School

Mersea Island School currently has 380 pupils aged 2-11, this includes a nursery with capacity for up to 48 children. It is the only school on the island, serving a closely knit community. The school is located on Mersea Island, off the coast of Essex and close to Colchester. The area surrounding the school in the town of West Mersea is semi-rural. The island is famous for its oyster cultivation and traditional fishing boats, and has a history of sailing. Pupils derive from a very mixed social background, and many of the pupils have parents and grandparents who attended the school.

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of children and young people. All positions will involve appropriate checks and clearances.
