January 2025

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a team of dedicated professionals who aim to empower our students to be the next generation of leaders through our values of leadership, enrichment, scholarship and kindness.

The Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department is a strong and successful department, committed to improving teaching methods to provide the greatest benefit to the students. Teamwork is an essential key to this, with each member of staff participating fully in the work of the Department.

The Department consists of six full-time and six part-time members. The Department's facilities are good and include a suite of eight classrooms and an office, in which each teacher has a working area with access to a computer and printer. There is also a large storeroom for textbooks, equipment, worksheets and examination papers. The Department has interactive smart screens in all eight mathematics classrooms which are used in most lessons. There is access to the IT network to work with mathematics software, in particular graph drawing and data handling packages.

The school has a sixth form entry. In Year 7 the girls are taught in form groups until the start of Year 8, when they are set. The students are split into two equal populations, from each of these a set 1 is formed with the remainder forming two set 2's. All sets follow the same scheme of work and are taught in parallel, with top sets going into greater depth. Set shifts are decided at the end of year 8 and 9.

The two populations continue into KS4 where students are streamed into sets 1 to 3. The set 1's on each side of the year complete the GCSE Mathematics syllabus by the first term of Year 11. Both groups go on to study the Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths, which is taken with their GCSE at the end of Year 11. The remaining students study the higher linear Edexcel GCSE Mathematics specification, which they all take at the end of Year 11. This allows the lower ability sets more time for consolidation and for the higher ability sets to work on some topics of the A level specification.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 we have adopted the approach advocated by the Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) using both the Exploring Maths and STP Mathematics series of textbooks to help guide our scheme of work. The pupils enjoy this highly interactive method as it links well to their junior school experience. In KS4 'Essential Mathematics for GCSE' by Michael White is used by the all the sets. The Oxford GCSE Maths (Higher) book is used as a supplement.

Years 7 to 9 have three 1-hour periods of Mathematics each week, whilst Years 10 and 11 have seven 1-hour periods a fortnight. For KS3, homework is set after every lesson and the length of homework is dependent on the year. A combination of MyMaths and MathsWatch used primarily for KS3 homework tasks. For year 10, homework is set after each lesson to begin with and develops into a larger once a week homework later in the course. Year 11 have a weekly past paper to complete for homework. A combination of MathsWatch and paper tasks are used for KS4 homework tasks.

In the Sixth Form, Mathematics and Further Mathematics are some of the most popular A Level subjects. For Mathematics the Edexcel linear specification is followed and the course is divided into 3 components: pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics. The time allocation is 9 hours a fortnight in Year 12 and 8 hours per fortnight in Year 13, with two members of staff teaching each group. Students complete the full A Level at the end of Year 13. For Further Mathematics we offer an accelerated A-Level Mathematics in year 12 and then students will complete Core Pure 1, Core Pure 2, Further Pure 1 and an applied module from Further Mathematics. Students can only move on to study the full Further Mathematics if they achieve an A or A* grade in A-Level Mathematics, or the AS qualification if the achieve a B grade. Students who achieve a grade C or below have the opportunity to resit A-level Mathematics in year 13 to improve their grade.

The Department is keen to promote the enjoyment of mathematics. As part of this, all students in year 8 are entered into the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge, all year 10 are entered into the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge and all Year 12 and 13 are invited to complete the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. Students also take part in group Maths Challenges and Maths Feasts when applicable. The Department also work runs a weekly STEP class for Sixth Form students to help them with optional Mathematics extension papers including TAMU, STEP and MAT.
