SEMH LSA

Monday to Friday, 9am-3pm

Hatfield Wick Education offers support and guidance to children and young people who are struggling with social, emotional and mentalhealth issues that affect their ability to learn. As a Learning Support Assistant, you'll support, motivate and guide pupils to help them overcome barriers that are preventing them from achieving their full potential.

You'll work closely with Teachers and our Therapeutic staff to identify the needs of learners who require help and plan how to support them.

Barriers to learning can include:

  • Trauma
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Emotional issues
  • Lack of confidence
  • Mental health
  • Anxious school refusal
  • Neurodiversities
  • SEMH needs

You might work with students on a 1:1 basis or in a small group (of no more than 5 students).

Responsibilities

  • Building a trusting relationship with the young people you work with
  • Ensure the needs assessment is followed at all times
  • Implement strategies and support learners in self-esteem andconfidence-building activities
  • Support learners who need extra support with their learning
  • Use empathic listening skills to support learners to explore a range of issuesthat may be creating barriers to their learning
  • Inspire and motivate learners and help to promote positive behaviour
  • Liaise with their teachers and therapeutic staff
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Adhere to the HWE safeguarding policy at all times
  • Help with transition activities for learners moving to secondary schools or onto further education

Ideal Person specification:

  • Grade 4 GCSE or equivalent Maths and English
  • Be passionate about working with young people
  • Experience working with young people with neurodiversities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
  • Experience working with children or young people who have experienced trauma
  • Knowledge of attachment difficulties.
  • Youth work qualification?
  • Counselling or mentoring skills and qualifications would be desirable but not as essential as relevant experience.

The ideal person will be empathetic, positive, forward looking and able to buildauthentic supportive relationships with students with a range of challenges. You will be non-judgmental and support our young people to experience success in theirlearning and wellbeing. You will be able to explore the young person's hopes anddreams for their future and help them build a plan to get there. You will workalongside teachers and therapeutic staff as part of the therapeutic team. You will alsobe supporting young people in aspects of their academic learning in maths andEnglish under the guidance of their teacher.

Hatfield Wick Education is an Accredited Alternative Education Provider for Essex that delivers education and therapeutic services for children and young people who cannot access learning in a mainstream setting.

We are commissioned by the Local Authority, schools, and families to provide educational and therapeutic support to children and young people with a diverse range of special educational needs, including:

• Anxiety / ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) • Asperger's • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) • ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) • Sensory Processing Disorder (auditory, visual, sensory, memory) • Attachment Disorder (including those associated with adoption & fostering) • Separation Anxiety Disorder

Our overarching goal is to identify challenges, remove obstacles and build strategies to help children and young people reach, maintain, and exceed their personal goals and boost their confidence and self-esteem. By doing this, they can return to mainstream education and continue to thrive.
