We are currently looking for an enthusiastic Clerk to Governors. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing agendas in consultation with the Headteacher and Chair of Governors; taking and writing up the minutes at Governors' meetings, and issuing documentation and other information to the Governing Body. The Clerk will need to become familiar with the DfE Governance Handbook, and provide accurate advice to Governors as necessary.

Training will be made available for the successful candidate.

Scope of the role

  • You will offer your services as an independent clerk, covering the termly Governing Body FGB & committee meetings , and any other special meetings that arise, which are agreed should be clerked.
  • In addition to the meetings you will attend a termly agenda setting meeting held early in each term, unless it is agreed that a face to face meeting is not possible, in which case the agendas will be agreed by email.
  • At the outset of the agreement you will meet with the Chair of Governors to agree expectations of the role - the outcomes of that expectations meeting has been shared with you and is replicated below.

Pay

  • You will be paid at a rate of £345 per meeting
  • You will be expected to keep a log of your fees in order to process payment and to enable Burnham-on-Crouch Primary School to monitor and process your claim for professional work undertaken. Claims for professional fees and expenses should be claimed at the end of each meeting cycle.

Additional conditions

  • You will undertake the Local Authority Clerks' Induction training prior to (or during the first term of) your employment as Clerk to the Governors,
  • You will attend the Local Authority Clerk Briefings (or seek out the information from the Essex Clerks' Association website) each term, to ensure that you keep your knowledge up to date.
  • You will operate as a self-employed person for tax purposes and will notify the school of your URN (Unique Reference Number).

Contact and line management

  • The Chair of Governors and/or Headteacher will be your first point of contact with the Governing Body.
  • The Chair of Governors and Headteacher will meet with you on an annual basis to discuss performance and ensure that your role as Clerk to the Governors is successful for you and the Governing Body.
