Permanent | 34 hours per week
Term-time plus core and activity days (38.1 weeks per year)
We have an excellent opportunity for a friendly, personable and approachable Matron to join our 'Excellent in Every Aspect' rated Independent day and boarding School. The role will be Matron to Elwyn's House, home to 70 boys between Year's 9 to 11. Elwyn's is proud of its friendly and happy atmosphere and overall good sense of humour, with a diverse and varied range of talents from the borders. Elwyn's aims to be a home away from home to prepare pupils not only for their exams, but for life beyond Felsted.
The role of Matron is to become an integral member of the House team in supporting the Housemaster in the pastoral, welfare and safeguarding of pupils, in order to provide a stable, non-judgmental environment for students to encourage a feeling of trust. Safeguarding is of paramount importance, as is confidentiality for when information needs to be passed on and also when a pupil needs more specialist support around sensitive issues that should be clearly understood. A Matron's role is not a disciplinary one and is expected to be a visible presence, whether helping to run the House or by being available if students need someone to talk to. In addition to the pastoral care, the Matron line manages the Domestic team and cleaning schedules within their boarding house.
The successful applicant will have a clear understanding of pastoral care provisions, a compassionate and welcoming predisposition and able to connect to all personnel within the School to build effective and professional working relationships. It is essential that applicants have experience within a pastoral capacity, are confident using computers and willing to provide a 'can-do' approach to student welfare, customer service and working with young people.
This is a permanent role working 34 hours per week (Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 2:00pm and Thursdays and Fridays until 5:00pm) during term-time plus 21 days within the School holidays, which may include weekend days. Further information can be found within the 'Role Information Pack' and on our website felsted.org/boarding-day/senior-boarding/elwyns.

About Felsted School
Felsted is a leading independent co-educational day and boarding school, situated in the picturesque village of Felsted in North Essex. Originally founded by Richard Lord Riche as a Church of England Grammar School, Felsted School is proud of a heritage that dates back to 1564. In 2014 the School celebrate its 450th anniversary; one of only a handful of schools in the country that have claimed this historic milestone. The event was marked by an historic service at St Paul’s Cathedral together with a very special visit from Her Majesty and His Royal Highness to signed two plaques; one commemorating the 450th anniversary and the other to mark the opening of our brand new Boarding House Follyfield.
Felsted offers its pupils an excellent, well-rounded education, offering real opportunities for pupils to develop, grow and learn in a safe and nurturing environment, as part of the School’s local, national and international community. Fundamental to the success of the school community are the values of respect and well-being; the children are encouraged to make healthy choices and develop good manners, self-motivation, self-respect and consideration for others. As pupils progress, this sense of community is reinforced by a league system that inspires loyalty, and develops leadership and teamwork for competitions and activities across the whole curriculum.
With purpose-built classrooms and recreational areas, learning and play are appropriately separated and tailored to each stage of development. In line with Felsted’s strong reputation for sport, the Preparatory School’s facilities are outstanding; spacious playing fields, heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, two Astroturf pitches, a large sports hall, three squash courts, six netball courts and 25 tennis courts. There are huge opportunities in the performing arts and in the theatre, practice rooms, auditoria and exhibition rooms, creativity and imagination flourish.
